It was just before 7 pm on a Friday and although we were promised a dry and fresh afternoon, it hadn't ceased raining! Ryan and I were relaxing there discussing the weekend's tennis rankings, at the ready for the sixth telephone call of the day to arrive. Before long we received a call from a young lady on a company excursion who had pulled into the BP petrol station in East Dulwich and filled petrol in a diesel new-shape Skoda Yeti hire car by mistake. She was rather agitated apparently, stating "I can't believe I have destroyed the car! I am so accustomed to putting petrol in my petrol car I completely forgot that I was running a diesel!" We advised her to calm down and not to worry, and that such things unfortunately do happen. She was able to get the car into a protected area and, seeing as it was only a few minutes from the office, we could find her rather quickly. The bad fuel was drained and she could get back to the motel she was staying at. Even though we got extremely wet, it was all worth the effort to see her drive off calm and much less stressed. Another misfuel correction in Southwark done well in my mind!

The 3 things you HAVE TO know about petrol in diesel!

AdBlue In Diesel

All over Southwark we are discovering increasingly more cases of AdBlue contamination when a driver has poured AdBlue right into their diesel tank. This is to a degree as a result of drivers not being totally sure the right way to work with it (be aware: it's actually not a fuel additive), and partially simply because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are generally directly near to each other on the car.

So, what's the trouble with putting AdBlue in the diesel vehicle?

Seeing as AdBlue is mainly ionised water, it's like putting water in your tank. Diesel and water do not mix whatsoever and attempting to run a diesel car on water will never work. In addition, the urea is quite corrosive to your fuel system pipes and seals and is prone to crystallisation, obstructing injectors and fuel filters. If you put AdBlue into the fuel tank get it drained immediately. And definitely don't turn over the car - not even to move it off the pump. In the instance that you did start the vehicle you would almost certainly need to have the full fuel system cleaned and fuel filters replaced.

Should you discover yourself to be in this scenario do not panic! Contact us, the UK’s Premium fuel contamination service. Our technicians have got the technical skills and experience to have you back on the road rapidly and efficiently, no mess, no fuss.

Waste Fuel Disposal

Got a fuel container at the back of your premises full of out of date, unusable or contaminated fuel? We are able to help you to get rid of it. We have been called out to many privately owned and commercial premises in Southwark to deal with taking away and disposing of fuel storages. We are covered by the Environment Agency to allow us to remove and recycle waste fuel legally and safely.

Whether the fuel storage is a subterranean container, a portable bowser, or even a few drums in a shed, as long as we are able to reach it, we can certainly empty it.

Wrong Fuel in Car in SE22 Postcode - East Dulwich Misfueling

What a great night's uninterrupted sleep! It was 7:00 am on a gloomy Monday and I was on the way to assist an elder lady after she had put petrol in her diesel grey Citron DS4 in East Dulwich. I had been informed she drove away from the petrol station and stranded along a country lane en route to pay a visit to her family. I popped the location into the Satnav and arrived within 60 minutes. I arrived at the stricken lady and drained the contaminated fuel from the car. While I was doing it she said to me, "I have been becoming quite absent-minded in my old age and forgot about the vehicle using diesel as I had only purchased it a few days back when my other one, which I had for about 25 years, finally broke down". I got the drain completed and she gave me a Murray mint and thanked me for my hard work. Such a delightful Southwark lady!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
